The International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies (SMST) is a volunteer organization made up of industry professionals, scientists and researchers dedicated to disseminating technical education on the unique class of materials which exhibit shape memory and superelastic properties.

SMST was founded in 1992 in Monterey, California at the International Conference on Martensitic Transformations (ICOMAT), where research relating to shape memory alloys had been presented over the years. A group of industry leaders recognized the need for a focused conference to address the more practical engineering aspects and applications of shape memory alloys. The first SMST conference was held in March 1994 at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California, and since then, an SMST conference has been held at Asilomar every three years.
